When I first got to know that Angela Chang Shao Han is going to have her debut album, my first impression was like – “What again!? Another bubblegum Taiwanese actress-turned-singer?” However, her first single, 寓言 (Yu Yan / Fable) did really blow me off. I finally realized my mistake of judging a book from its covers. Hence on, she is one of my favorite female singers in the world.
隐形的翅膀 (Yin Xing De Chi Bang) has a smooth melody and plus Angela’s voice, this song is nonetheless – sweet! This song is the ending theme song for 2006 GTV Drama, 爱杀17 (Ai Sha Shi Qi / Bump Off Lover).
Angela’s first attempt to sing modern electronic pays off pleasingly in 潘朵拉 (Pan Duo La) though her voice sounds a little kiddy. The lyricist describe the love is like Pandora’s Box where one refrain themselves from opening the alluring package. It brings curiosity.
香水百合 (Xiang Shui Bai He) is a happy-go-lucky song. Next track, 真的 (Zhen De) is a drastic switch of emotion. This song is so touching that tears began to form in my eyes.
Listeners will find it quite fresh to hear Angela singing rap in 保护色 (Bao Hu Se). Composed and written by JJ Lin Jun Jie (林俊杰), this song is catchy and how wrong can a good composer like JJ goes? 惊天动地 (Jing Tian Dong Di) is another one of the fast tempo tracks found in this album. This track is also recommendable.
The media often connect her to Stefanie Sun Yan Zi (孙燕姿) for their style of singing are quite similar when Angela made her debut two years ago. In my opinion, both of them have their own style and no matter how I listen, I still cannot find similarities.

I felt exactly the same like you when Angela was going to release her debut album. Never expect her to sing a song like “Yu Yan”. The song really impressed me. Now I would say she is one of my favorite Taiwanese female singers.
Going back to this album, I have such high expectation towards Angela after her sophomore album, “Aurora”. This album disappointed me a bit when I found that the songs are not as unique as those “Aurora”. And it puts me off a little when she’s trying to be cute, even though she is really cute. I mean, we don’t want another Jolin Tsai or Cyndi Wong. But hey, there is Angela’s biggest asset - her strong vocal. For me, that puts her to another class.
Angela is a breath of fresh air in the dull Taiwanese pop music industry. She has to be a singer. :)

She tries too hard to be avant-garde in her videos though. She should stick to singing, because acting like Bjork makes her look stupid. If she stuck to the style used in that single where she does a bit of rap and stuff, that’d be golden. And she looks hell of hot in that video, which is quite an achievement.
Plus her name isn’t Angela Zhang, it’s Angela Chang.
Oh, and Jessy, you’re right about that - we sure as hell don’t want another Jolin or Cyndi. One of each is already too many. Especially Cyndi. She’s kind of…. annoying.

Nah, Taiwanese names usually use Wade-Giles pinyin, and occasionally Tongyong Pinyin. If you’re not familiar with those systems, check out http://www.pinyin.info
’s all good though - I personally think they SHOULD use pinyin, but they still stubbornly stick to idiotic political arguments against it.
Oh, and I never thought if it before you mentioned it, but I can hear a bit of similarity in Angela and Yanzi’s voices. I don’t know exactly what it is, but there’s something about the tone and delivery that on occasions makes them sound a little similar. Still far from the same, but a bit similar.

Well, I’ve said this that I’m disappointed with her latest “Pandora” album. However, I’ve been listening to the album again recently and I really love it!
Such amazing vocal and wide range.
And the lyrics of “Invisible Wings” really hit me!
