About Jed

Jed - who has written 10 posts on Chinese Music Blog.

Jedi, a.k.a. yellowyellowyellow, is a little annoying when you first meet him, and you will doubt his stipulated gender, male, for perhaps the rest of his life, or your life, whichever comes last. He is a photowhore and postwhore of the worst species, rendering his attempts to suppress the narcissistic and garrulous side of his personality useless. Other than that, he is proud to be one of the moderators on the forums, though you could debate whether that benefits the forums or not. His body resides in the USA, but he has left his heart in China after living there for most of his secondary school years. The voguish, innovative, and melodic holds his attention in concern to Chinese music, and most things in general. He writes astonishing blogs, plays philosopher and psychologist in his spare time, and occasionally translates the odd song or two. He is fluent in both Mandarin and English and can (unfortunately) understand Cantonese. He also loves all things old school, whether it be flower power, huge glasses, skinny pants, or old school R&B. You’ll have to get to know him properly to see his true amazingness as a person. He has been blessed with the gift to make people smile. Being a love-peace-music hippie, he will listen to your various vents and rants, and will encourage you and help you when you need it. Being a hopeless romantic, he will spoil you rotten with poems and love songs, once he gets to love you of course. wink  Oh, and he can talk for China. =]

Angela Change: Ang 5.0

The new version isn’t always better than the old version – Microsoft has demonstrated this brilliantly in its Windows series. Angela Chang’s album, called Ang 5.0, while not bad, doesn’t show itself as worthy as her previous albums. This album is composed of songs with a supposingly more cheerful side. But when compared to her [...]

你很忙就不用写好歌啊?Does being busy excuse you from writing good songs? I couldn’t expect much actually, as some moderator on the forums reminded me. Jay’s been involved with directing, starring in, and writing the story for Secret, his movie; he’s also been filming in Kung Fu Dunk, primed for release before the New Year. But for his fans [...]

Jolin Tsai: Agent J (Te Wu ‘J’)

I wondered what Jolin’s record company was doing when I first listened to this new album, Agent J. I really can’t come up with any reason why there aren’t any better songs on this album, and why it was produced in such mediocrity either. Basically, the second time through, I wanted to shut the music [...]

Rainie Yang: Free Gate (Ren Yi Men)

If only I had a 任意门, I would be in Dreamland right now. But at the end of the all-nighter (too much pearl milk tea and soda), and the beginning of the morning, I was greeted by the arrival of Rainie Yang’s new album. I did not expect much – after all, Rainie’s known for [...]

Jasmine Ting Zhu: Rain’s Sound (Yu Sheng)

Elegant, brilliant, and congenial, Ting Zhu quickly captured my heart when I first saw her (and she first) popped onto MTV, as New Artist of the Month. Her Yu Sheng (雨声) MTV constantly played, and the song just stayed in my brain. I found myself singing it often. So when I scanned a newspaper, and [...]

JJ Lin (Jun Jie): Westside (Xi Jie)

JJ Lin did not disappoint me. He amazed me, finally proving himself to be a musician of Jay and Leehom’s caliber. Without sacrificing personal style, he has presented a challenge to all other singer-songwriters with this album. It is slightly disappointing that tracks 1, 3, and 6 are all bridges, useful in creating the overall [...]

Cheer Chen Qi Zhen: The Posture Of Flower (Hua De Zi Tai)

For a rock album to impress me, it must be an exceptional album, since I, do NOT like rock. But this album, a collection of live performances, did just that. Chen Qi Zhen’s light, vanilla-scented voice leaves a sweet fragrance in my heart that I rarely experience – and she does it in every song. [...]

Vanness Wu: V. Dubb

This album is watered-down, swished-around, and nicety-split Nelly, an imitator of style yet not of spirit. But if you’re really craving for some Chinese hip-hop, this might be the closest you can get without digging deep down into the underground industry. This album is decent at most – and though I thought it was atrocious [...]

Fei Yu Qing: Green Tree (Qing Qing Jiao Shu)

Like many of us, I never heard of this singer until his duet with Jay, Qian Li Zhi Wai. I remember asking my mom a few months ago, “Who is Fei Yu Qing?” She explained that he was a famous Chinese singer and that he was my grandma’s favorite. I wasn’t too interested, and I [...]

Stefanie Sun (Yanzi): Against The Light (Ni Guang)

This album isn’t great, but at least it filled my expectations. The songs in this album do a great job of showcasing Stephanie’s unique and enunciated vocals, and I find myself giving her props for what she did on this album. The first half of this album was brilliant. Afterwards, it fades into a collection [...]
