Eason Chan
What’s Going On?

To get into the skin of this topic, Eason never disappointed me with his music. Besides being talented, he is very passionate toward his music and music in general. I like the feel of the album; it’s very “back-in-the-days”with the old telephones and cars. What’s working really well is that the music feels retro as well, such as track 2 (The Last Hippie) and track 10 (Cantonese Old Movie). The album includes different types of genres other than just canto-pop. Some tracks are more rock than others and some are slow and calming. You will not get bored of hearing almost the same thing over again!

If you bought the second version, there is a folder with 1 bonus CD and 1 DVD. The Bonus CD contain 5 live versions of his tracks. I didn’t really care about this one, but the DVD was good. There’s like a making-of movie clip and I enjoyed watching it a lot. I got to see the behind the scenes things such as Eason making jokes in the recording studio or the team at work. Eason also talked about the songs and his thoughts.

I don’t want to critique on every track. I think they are all fairly good and yeah, some are more popular than others. The people who worked behind every single track put in a lot of effort so we should try to appreciate all of them. The lyrics were a bit complicated in this album. The meanings are deep, which is a bit hard for me to understand, maybe not for the rest of you. I just want to make a some short comments on some of my favorite ones in this album.

“I am Deeply Hurt” (track no.7) is my favorite one believe it or not. I know Hong Kong tends to lean towards the Canto-pop side and it’s been a trend since the Four Heavenly Kings were hot?! But anyways, I think this track has a lot to say about the society and way of life. I just love the opening when it sounded like it was a sad song but it really wasn’t. I think it means sometimes things are not as bad as we think it is in the beginning.

When I was listening to this album, track no.10 “Old Chinese Movie” did not stand out a lot because the music and vocal was much simpler than the rest. After a few times WITH reading the lyrics (written by Eason), I like it a lot. He’s talking about going through his old things and memories pop up in his head. I think it’s very heartwarming.

Lastly about the album design, if you bought the real ones, which I hope you all did, you will find it quite nice. It opens up like a flat box with a removable cover. The size is like a regular CD case, but slightly bigger. There’s a booklet of photographies with lyrics and an attached CD. Great photos. If you noticed, the title was meant to be threads. Very refreshing.

Thank you for reading. I’m just doing this for fun and I hope you all enjoyed it. Heads up for Eason’s upcoming album: Listen to Eason Chan.
