Hins Cheung
The Book of Laughter and Forgetting (Xiao Wang Shu)

Even though the Guangzhou born singer Hins Cheung has based his singing career in Hong Kong ever since his second album, he sings mostly Mandarin instead of Cantonese song. “The Book of Laughter and Forgetting”, a title borrowed from the book by Milan Kundera is his first ever Cantonese album.

Unlike his previous albums, there are quite a few HK pop style songs in this album, including the first single, “馀震/Yu Zhan”. I love it immediately when I heard the song, even before I got the album. “笑忘书/Siu Mong Shue”, a lovely ballad and the only song composed by Hins himself, is also my favorite song in the album. It’s quite a melancholic song especially the lyrics describes the loneliness and emptiness of city folk. I totally love the melody and the lyrics that I can’t help but play it again and again in my room.

Other than his signature power ballads, there are also upbeat songs like “两座位跑车/Leong Zho Wai Pao Che” and “不能不见/But Nang But Kin”. The former reminds me of Daniel Chan for some reason. Track 2 “骚灵情歌/Sou Ling Ching Goh”, a soul ballad, is another of my favorites. I think Hins is good in singing this type of songs.

The album also includes “遇见神/Yu Kin Sun/Meeting God”, a church song recorded by Hins last year.

  1. Nice review.

How do you compare it with his previous album? Do you reckon it’s better?

  2. ~Jessy~

I prefer this album compared to his previous Mandarin one.

  3. This is Hins’ first cantonese albumn and I believe this is really a wonderful one. His voices seem to be more mature, more loving and touching while singing love songs.
