Joey Yung
Bi-Heart
In this latest Cantonese album “Bi-Heat”, Joey Yung tried out different genres of music such as rock and roll, electronic dance, bossanova, R&B etc.
First hit “More Singing, More Power” shows Joey’s vocal ability. She sounds good in this type of pop-rock songs with her strong vocal. “Girl From Heaven” which uses acoustic guitar in it’s instrumentation, looks like a direct description of the love life of a celebrity. No matter how successful her career is, a girl is still longing for true love and to be with her lover. Meanwhile, “Fall in Love in Mars” is a ranting of singles, also one of my favorite songs. If we can’t find love in Earth, why not try in Mars?
“Culprit”, composed by Ronald Ng is a another beautiful ballad. The graduate from Berklee College of Music is one of my favorite producers. He has been the producer of Twins’s albums since their first EP. Some of his other famous composition are Joey’s “Hide From You” (Tou Bei Nei) and Nicholas Tse’s “Can’t Stay” (Fei Zao But Hor). “Bad Friends” and “Not Yet” are another two potential karaoke hits. Joey did a good job in both songs.
Joey’s albums these few years have followed the same album structure. This one goes the same. Almost each song is followed by an interlude. It is interesting, however it also distrupts the flow of the songs, as some of the interludes are not music but merely short sound clips.
Overall, it’s a good production. Personally, I like the ballads in the album far more than the other songs. Nevertheless, it shows Joey’s versatility. Perhaps it’s this versatility that secures Joey as one of the best vocals in Hong Kong music industry.
