Joey Yung
Ten Most Wanted

Joey is always one of my favorite female singers. Not only because she can sing very well, she’s also willing to try out new things. Troughout the years, we also see her emerge from a young girl to a superstar. It’s without doubt that she’s the most popular female singer now in Hong Kong.

This album is aptly named “Ten Most Wanted”. Although it’s not perfect, however all the songs are above par. There are less karaoke songs in this album compared to her previous ones. And her songs are getting harder and harder to sing!

Track 1: 金银岛 Kam Ngan Dou (Treasure Island)
The album starts with a funky, groovy, circus-like song. Quite a fun song to listen.

Track 2: 摩登时代 Mo Dang See Doi (Modern Times)
Nice minor-key ballad using silent play to describe a relationship. Joey did a brilliant job as usual.

Track 3: 堂堂男人 Tong Tong Nam Yan (Gentlemen)
A surprise from Joey! It’s a splendid Cabaret-style song. It’s so sweet and fun and Joey did very well in the vocal too.

Track 4: 赤地雪 Chek Dei Suet (Snow of Clear Land)
This is kinda pop rock, the same style as “越唱越强 Yuet Cheong Yuet Keong”. Again, Joey shows her vocal ability and range.

Track 5: 跟珍芳达做健身操 Gun Jan Fong Dud Joe Kin Sang Mou (Aerobic With Jane Fonda)
This Mavis Fan Hsiao Xuen’s composition is another great surprise. Joey doesn’t sing this type of song often, but she did it very well in “playing” with her vocal. It’s a bit Gwen Stefani-like and it’s easily my favorite song in the album.

Track 6: 流泪眼望流泪眼 Lao Loi Ngan Mong Lao Loi Ngan (Teary Eyes Looking at Teary Eyes)
Another beautiful melancholy ballad. Joey’s vocal control is excellent, especially the alternate of falsetto and non-falsetto. The emotion is expressed so well in the flowing melody at chorus.

Track 7: 舌尖开叉 Seh Jim Hoi Chah (Tip of Tougue Spreads Out)
Also composed by Mavis Fan. It’s another electronic song, but not as good as track 5.

Track 8: 上次坐飞机 Seong Chih Cho Fei Gei (Last Time An A Plane)
What a sweet and sad song! It’s really nothing special about it but I just love the feel of the song. Simple and sweet.

Track 9: 最后的茱丽叶 Joi Hao Dik Jui Lai Yip (The Last Juliet)
Powerful ballad and full of emotion. It’s my favorite ballad from the album.

Track 10: 冬眠 Dong Min (Hibernate)
A typical but nice karaoke song like a lot of other Joey’s songs.

Recommended tracks: 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9.

I’m a fan in joey. Don’t know why other ppl said she looks ugly, sluty, and she sings bad
but i think that joey’s the best female singer in hong kong. kelly chan gigi leung and denise ho sounds like s*** when they sing. i love joey 4ever!!!

  2. Candice,

I like Joey. But why bashing other singers? You feel bad when other people say bad things about Joey, the same goes for Kelly, Gigi or Denise’s fans when they see your post.
Btw, I don’t think they are bad.

  3. Bry

Joey is another of my favourite singers! I like this album very much…the songs are really Ten Most Wanted!!!

  4. Hi Bry,

    Thanks for leaving your message.
Yup, the songs in this album are very nice.

I used to have a misconception of Joey when she first started out (the karaoke songs that anyone can sing/all the songs sound alike). Then it was weird when she went on the weight loss thing.

She wasn’t a very strong vocalist when she first started, so it was very easy to just overlook her among the many young Hong Kong “stars” that they put on a pedestal nowadays.

But I digress. After I kept reading about how people like her vocals on blogs like this one, it pegged my curiousity so I listened to track 02 on this album. I’m not a fan of female ballads, but her vocals are pretty good in this. I’m still bias towards male vocalist such as David Tao, so it’s a big compliment that she’s grabbed my attention with her range. I still think her voice could be more solid, but I think it’s a personal preference. Overall, thanks for the review :) it’s really opened up my eyes to the “new” Joey.

  6. Hi Meruko,

Nice to hear that she’s grabbed your attention.

I agree with you on the vocal. I too prefer her singing with a more solid vocal and I’m still looking forward to more of those songs.
