Justin Lo
Justin

The first time I heard his song “Erica” is from radio. I had no idea who the singer is but I love the song immediately. Before I know more about him, he has received the “best male newcomer” award in various music awards.

Justin grew up in the United States. After coming back to Hong Kong, he met famous album producer, Mark Lui, and became a composer. He has since then composed songs for other singers. His impressing performance as a background singer in Leo Ku’s concert then led him to become a recording artiste.

First, I was skeptical that he’s one of those composer-turn-artiste singers, as a lot of them can’t really sing. However, this guy can really sing! He doesn’t have a unique voice, but there’s something special in his voice, something that’s able to move the listeners. His wide range and outstanding singing skill make his otherwise good composition even greater.

Most of the songs in the album are composed by himself. The songs are main stream, yet they give room for him to fully use his skill and range. “好人 Hoe Yan”, “我不是好人 Ngo But See Hoe Yan”, “命硬 Meng Ngang” and “我有今日 Ngo Yao Kam Yat” all have the potential to become popular radio hits. There’re 2 versions of “好人”. The last track is titled “Hao Ren (Original). The last track sounds like a refined and more easy listening version, but the first track, which is the remixed version is more creative.

“Erica” is catchy and R&B and a little David Tao-ish, likewise for “Superstar”. They get better each time you listen to them. Acoustic “冰淇淋之味 Bing Kei Lam Gee Mei” talks about his experience of racism in United States. “Loving You” and “White Christmas” are the 2 covers of oldies. Being a fan of the original song, I prefer the original version of “Loving You”, but I have to admit that Justin did a brilliant job in the falsetto part.

This is a must-buy album. After listening to this album, I have no doubt that he’s the most potential newcomer in 2005.

is he the one who did this rap in canto?? to make chinese music more aware in america?? he looks so familiar

  2. Shez: I don’t know bout that.
There’s no rap songs in the album.

  3. Shez

    hmmmm….. must be mistaken then

  4. John

    冰淇淋之味…

you say he talks about racism, is it racism towards asian or afro-americans?

  5. John:

Well he didn’t state specifically in the song.
It’s just a song about equality.
But his personal experience is of course racism towards Asians.
I heard his interview on radio that day and he talked about that.

  6. Kev

hmmm His style is like a one man boy band(backstreetboys) and its so gay. The music is too plain and he sings TOO high!!!! ITs way too overrated and overdone.!!

  7. Kev: So gay? :o Lol that’s the first time I hear someone decribe his voice like that….

Yeah, he sings quite high. That’s because he has a wide range and high pitch. :) But I don’t agree that the music is plain. I like the arrangement of the songs, especially for the chorus harmony which Justin did them himself. That is great!

Of course there’s room for improvement. Let’s wait for his second album. :D
    Thanks for your comment!

I think Justin is a rare and brilliant talent who brings a fresh perspective to the Hong Kong music scene. He is able to merge the elements of the western and the eastern music into a “crossover” style which is uniquely his own. He has certainly changed the local music scene and standard, no matter how small the contribution, he certainly has marked his footprint in the HK music industry in such a short time. His music has touched people’s lives, making their days a little easier because of his music….a little more compassion from everyone, the world would be a better place.

  9. Well said, Mary!

I think Justin is one of a few artists who can composes, produces AND sings very well. What’s more impressive is that he has a voice that can touch many people. It’s inborn talent, you don’t gain it, you are gifted with it.

Justin is a talented singer which he has he unique voice to sing out a good song from his heart and of course from his hardwork and determination to make him successful in singing career . No doubt he deserves the best award and support from the fans..because he really can make it.

  21. joo

love him is because the song “冰淇淋之味”, when the 1st time i heard this song, i like the ending very much…. “hey…ice cream”.
like his sound when ….he’s laugh…
that is why i start to listen to his song repeatly every day.
not really interested on his outlook, but like mostly his voice…especially when he’s laugh…

  22. He sang (the pitch) too low especially ‘Erica’. When he sings ‘Jao Yam’, he really does ‘Jao Yam’. However, he’s quite good.

  23. Girl with Justice

“好人 Hoe Yan” the best song in that album was not composed by him(Justin), i think you should make it clear, you should be fair to the composer who wrote this song, you people should give credit to the composer who wrote this song because it really helped him alot and i couldn’t believe Justin never thanked him when he got the award it is like, they were trying to steel the composer’s hard work!
