Michael Wong
Fairytale (Tong Hua)

After reading Jessy’s blog on Michael’s new album I was surprised not to see a blog on his previous album ‘tong hua’ as I always thought that this album was the one that had made him more famous in the celebrity world.

Michael is the first Chinese artist that I heard when I went to china and I instantly fell in love with the song ‘tong hua’

Michael was born on the 30th of august 1970 in ipoh to a family of 6 children in which he was the 3rd oldest. When he was 10, his parents invested in a piano for him and his younger sister and from then on he has been passionate about music. After splitting from the duo that he was in and releasing a previous 2 albums beforehand, fans of Michael had to wait another 2 years before he released his fairytale album on the 1st of January 2005 which was to become an instant success.

2.童话- tong hua (fairytale)
Must have been one of the most played and sung songs in 2005! It was played absolutely everywhere in china! I actually first saw the video before I heard the song and was crying by the end! Starts off very simply with a piano introduction and the emotion builds up in his voice along with the music. Quite simple melodic line and fairly repetitive but when you listen to this song it will stick in your head for ages and you’ll be singing it all day! The lyrics are really sweet and full of sweet sentimental lines such as “when you declared your love for me, my entire sky lit up with stars”

3.天堂- tian tang (heaven)
Very soft simple piece with just a piano accompaniment but does the trick for this song. the lyrics are very emtional and from the heart

4.少年- shao nian (teenage years)
Lively light playful song in the piano part as well as Michael’s voice. Reminds kids to enjoy their childhood and grown up’s to reminisce about theirs. Makes me want to stay a child forever ^^. It has got some truth in it though. You can never return to the past so you have to embrace what you have and be happy for what you had.

5.手机留言- shou ji liu yen (voicemail)
Haha another one of those love songs ballads that Michael does so well :D but for some reason before the end of this song I got a bit bored of the many repeating lyrics but this song did grow on me but it’s not the best that I’ve heard

6.向左走向右走 - xiang zuo zou xiang you zou (turn left, turn right)
One of those love songs again ^^ I like how it starts simply and builds up to the climax of the song that is the chorus and such simple lyrics can mean so much in a song:
“向左走还是向右走
我努力选择努力记得
不管世界有多辽阔
只要向著你走”

“should I walk left or right?
I strive to select and to remember
Disregarding how vast the world is
As long I walk towards you”

are more or less the translations

7.一点光一点亮- yi dian guang yi dian liang (a bit light a bit bright)
When I first heard the introduction I was surprised at how upbeat the song was as I previously just heard a whole load of ballads but this song is a change and there’s not a song like it in the album!

8.期限- qi qian (deadline)
Hmm when I got to this song and heard that it was another ballad all the lyrics just seemed to of blended together and I couldn’t seem to make myself enjoy this song no matter how much I listened to it but it’s got some pretty nice lyrics.

9.海边- hai bian (beach)
I loved the introduction! The violin and the piano! The two accompany eachother so well! Such a sweet song with sweet lyrics about love :D can’t really say much more but it’s more interesting as it has harmonies and I could pick out some English in there as well!

10.妹妹- mei mei (sister)
Oooooooooooo *jumps around excitedly* I LOVE this song!!! :D :D :D I’m not sure if he actually wrote this song for his sister but this song is great! It’s all about his sister and her rocky relationship with her boyfriend who is actually his best friend :S but it’s great how he’s telling her to forget about him even though that this person is his best friend. It just goes to show that he always puts family first above the rest and I think it’s such a sweet song with great words of advice from a brother to a sister

11.记得我爱你- ji de wo ai ni (remember I love you)
A great upbeat feel good song which you can just listen to any time of the day to get you into a happy mood! I think that he should do much more upbeat songs as they’re not that bad! And it also goes to show that Michael isn’t just good at writing ballads!

12.End
Nice relaxing ending and like it when he says “and they lived happily ever after” in true fairytale style!

Isn’t “少年” a duet with Gary Chao? I love that song!

  4. Yo Shez!

I think this is one of the best, if not the best album from Michael.

    Nice review!

  5. Shez

thanx! XD yes i did hear two voices but wasn’t sure who sang with him! like you say jessy “you learn something new every day!”

  6. I like this album much better than Yue Ding. I actually don’t like his upbeat songs. His voice just suits the ballads much better. The musical arrangement is composed well in the slow songs.

  7. I absolutely adore [妹妹]! I am very fortunate to have a bestfriend who’s like a big brother to me and that song definitely reminds me of him. Great review! :)

  8. At first,
    I really love this song.
But I got bored after a month or so after Tong Hua and Tian Tiang been played in TV and radio. In my opinion, Tong Hua’s a song that might attract you at first and make you feel bored after a month or so.
