Happy Chinese New Year!
Well, it’s not over yet, so I can still say that. ;)
I’ve watched a lot of music award shows during the break, so I decided to post several music award lists (translated in English) here. Also we’ll review the albums of some of the award holders. Here’s the first one!

I quickly glanced over the list, and there are some things I easily agreed with, while there were things that just do not seem right.
-I wonder if Twins would still win gold for the Best Group award if they weren’t as popular.
-Happy to see Justin Lo win gold for the Newcomer Male Singers award.
-Happy to see Janice Wei Lan win gold for the Newcomer Female Singers award.
-I think the outcome of the Best Male Singers awards seem pretty fair.
-Krusty winning silver for the Newcomer Groups award is a joke. Perhaps this is due to the low number of newcomer groups in 2005.
-Happy to see Mark Lui Chung Tak get picked for being the Best Composer.
Thanks for posting, Jessy. Looks like we need more Cantonese album reviews… hehe.

Hi Vic,
Twins’s winning of the gold award receives some controversy in HK too. What remains the fact is that no any other HK groups come near to their popularity. Well, I dunno… ;)
Justin and Janice are both talented singers. It’s great to see newcomers like them entering the industry.
I don’t remember any of Krusty’s songs. So, no comment… haha….
And yes, Mark Lui is a great composer. :D

It definitely is true that there has not been a group in Hong Kong that has even come close to Twins’ popularity, but I was hoping that this award ceremony would not look at popularity but more at talent. Twins nearly dominated the Taiwan charts when they started singing in Mandarin and released their Mandarin album… hehe. I remember reading about how S.H.E’s fans were outraged… lol.
It really is nice to see talented newcomers enter the Hong Kong music industry, especially since talent is quite scarce there. Justin can actually make music and not just sing, so that’s a double thumbs up from me =P
I didn’t actually “listen” to Krusty’s songs as much as I took several minutes to go over their songs. Their singing is anything but impressive, and from what I can tell after watching one of their very low budget music videos is that their record label got two decent-looking females to pose so that perhaps people will go out and purchase their album. Well, I don’t think I should review Krusty’s album, since I might make them look pretty bad… lol.
Nice to see you actually pay attention to composers as well =) Most people I know only care about who is singing and not those who are behind the scenes, working on the music and lyrics.

Most of the award ceremonies are about popularity. It seems a bit unfair, but well, it’s not up to you and me to decide. ;)
Vic: It’s the people working behind the scenes who make the songs and singers look good. :D But I think some composers should remain as composers. I’m a bit scared away by some “composers-turn-singers”…. lol.

lol yeah, I know what you mean =P My favorite composer-turned-artist is Jay Chou, and more recently, Justin Lo.

Where was it held? I’m not familiar with Awards yet.. :s sorry for the small question. How many kinds of awards is there other than the 2005 commercial radio music award??
February 13th, 2006 at 7:40 pm
It’s in HK. There’re so many Chinese music awards. In HK, there’re 4 most imporatant ones every year.
February 14th, 2006 at 7:19 pm
There are so many Chinese music awards that it’s difficult to remember all of them =P In Hong Kong, the four most prestigious ones are Metro Radio Hit, 903 Chik Chak (done by the radio station FM 903 and is seen to be the most fair of the four music awards), TVB Jade Gold, and RTHK. In Taiwan, the dominant music award is the Golden Melody.
Hong Kong music awards, in my and many others’ opinions, do not really mean much, because the four main awards cover so many categories and there are so few mainstream Hong Kong singers that the majority of these singers will get an award somehow =P
