“You are my superwoman…”.
The chorus part of his latest hits, a remake of Karyn White’s [Superwoman], can be heard everyday on the radio, television or even from your colleagues, in Malaysia. It is that popular. It doesn’t sound like the true women’s anthem in the 80’s. It is totally Gary – Cao Ge.
Excluding this first track- “Superwoman“, Gary composed all other nine songs in “Ge Ge Blue” and the making of the whole album. Deeply influence by western music in his childhood, “Ge Ge Blue” feels like a Western R&B album. Perhaps the best of all is the second track – “World’s Only You“. Although it almost sounded like it was sing by some boyband but still, simply ‘melting’ ( melt your heart.. :) ).
“Girl” (Gu Liang) is based on the chinese oldies – Jasmine Flower (Mo Li Hua). Well, seemed like it has become a norm that every R&B album must have at leasat song based on the chinese oldies (thanks to David Tao). A R&B”Jasmine Flower”. I somehow find it ‘hard to swallow’ :P . “Happy Valentines” (Qing Ren Jie Kuai Le) is one of my favourite. With a Malay Introduction: ” Sayang~….”, the song is both capturing and sad. “Laugh at my stupidity” (Xiao Wo Ben) is Gary’s previous most popular song (before ‘Superwoman’). “Promise me after count to five” (Shu Dao Wu Da Ying Wo) feels like Bryan Mcknight’s Back At One. A song full of number. The final track “Looks with approval” (Gua Mu Xiang Kan) is the theme song for Chinese Olympic Comitee. The song is about the spirit of never giving up to the mountain of obstacles (similar to Gary’s early career which he got rejeccted by record company countless of times) . Other notable track that worth listen countless of times are “Candle Light Dinner” (Zhu Guang Wan Cang) and “Silent Toy” (Chen Mo Wan Ju).
Wait a minute, did I just mentioned almost all of the track? Hmm, seemed like I did (excluding track no.5 “Fall In Love”, which I..erm.. really do not like). :D
Gary’s singing is flawless, which we have already notice when he did the duet with Michael Wong (Guang Liang) in “Teenage Years“(Shao Nian) last year. His composing ability can be sum up using his own words: “I started composing (music)because I want to sing some nice song”. This album is going to stay in my Ipod for some time :D.
