The Song About You (Guan Yu Ni De Ge)
Sam Lee Sheng Jie. Most people don’t know this name until this year, or until they know he is the singer of ‘Absolute Foolish Heart’(痴心绝对) and say the cliche:”oh, that’s him”. His debut album of the same title swept Asia in 2002. Two of his most popular song ‘Absolute Foolish Heart’ (痴心绝对) and ‘Let Go Of Hand’ (手放开) are among the highest selections of Karaoke everywhere. The 33 years old thrives on his own style of love song (which I call the ’sam-style love song’), simple but emotionally touching, capturing all of the hearts despite of generation and gender. His latest album ‘The Song About You’ (关于你的歌) released on last June 2006 receives warm welcome, rave reviews (including this one) and finally ended his fans’ 2 years wait. well, none of this came on his album ‘Cold Coffee’ (冷咖啡) 2 years ago.
The album ‘The Song About You’ contains tracks carefully selected by Sam from listening to near 500 demos within 2 years, few of them are composed by himself. Most of the songs are good, but I, like most of the fans, particularly like his sam-style love songs: Simple Ballad + Lyrics that Connects + Sam’s very own voice. Works like magic everytime, over and over again, and highly addictive. ‘Recently’ (最近) is my favourite track of all (which, pardon me for mentioning, was my song choice to enter the season 2 of ‘loud and proud’ singing competition). More notable tracks are ‘Starry Sky Under The Eye’ (眼底星空), Listen I love you (听，我爱你) and Really Want To Say ( 很想说) . Nonetheless, the album also includes his previous hits such as ‘Absolute Foolish Heart’, ‘Let Go Of Hand’ and his duet ‘You Love Him So Much’ (你那么爱他).
Sam’s music represents the essence of chinese style of love song, the ever foolish-hearted, ever faithful, sometimes secretive and hiding, sweet, and most of the time, beautifully sad ( or in chinese context 凄美).

one thing other than his touching love songs that makes me like him is his voice. he has the voice that can hit the high notes and yet not cracking it.

ahhh, this is what i love abt ChineseMusicBlog; i learn new chinese music everyday and it’s great!
forst of all thx for the review, you dont know how much i love chinese ballad. his voice is really alluring and strong, he could hit high register easily. *sigh* what a total ear candy. i particularly Ting Wo Ai ni, the end just makes me go “awwwww”. :p
最近 is also good, a combo of violin and piano PLUS sheng jie’s awesome vocal, i couldnt ask for more.

The review’s great. Got to know Sam only last year and absolutely love his songs! Like you said his songs touches oneself as I do not know how to read Chinese(damn!) Lurve all his songs as his voice’s is very mesmerising.

i really really really love sheng jie’s voice very much. i have litsened to many chinese singers and not one can sing the way sheng jie sings. i dont understand chinese.. but the way he sings really make me feeeeel the song.. u know what i mean? he’s really great… hope he brings out another album although i cant have enough of this one.
