The Outsider (Dou Yu)

The Outsiders is one of those TV series with a decent plot but is simply destroyed by horrible casting job. They should change the title to “The Cyborgs” because that’s just how flat, fake, and boring those actors are. I simply stopped watching the series after 2 episodes. However, for such a puny show, The Outsiders surprisingly has good soundtracks. There are minor scratches, however, the overall strength of the album overshadows the flaws.

Notable Tracks:
Let’s do the bad news first: Stop Ady An from singing, please! I mean, if you cannot catch the note, you’re still somewhat hopeful, but sh*t, she can’t even understand the tempo of the song! The piano guy technically follows her singing speed! That is freakin’ horrible! [放棄] is a 50-50 kind; meaning I like the composition but find the vocal (Dylan Guo’s) as flat as my kitchen floor, so that somewhat ruins the song. If you can’t stand it, just listen to the score version of the song. Call me crazy, but I think one of the reasons I bought this is because I saw an Indonesian/Malay name on the list: Juwita Suwito. Number one, I have never heard of her before. Number two, a fellow countryman makes it in Taiwan!? Wow, dude, that’s impressive. Anyway, as it turns out, Juwita is not exactly my fellow countryman, but I find her voice very similar to Ruth Sahanaya (one of famous Indonesian singers). It’s very clear and solid. I definitely love her piece [Breathe Again]. It has so much feelings; if only there are more Taiwanese singers with such ability, that’ll be awesome. The next one that I really like is its opening theme [不公平] by Jenny Yang (THANK GOD it’s not Ady’s version!!). It definitely suits the plot. I also like [Bed Time Story] by 陳達偉. It’s a calming, relaxing accoustic piece. His voice reminds me a little bit of Guang Liang. His other piece [Till The End] sounds like one of Richard Marx’s songs and the way he sings reminds me of JJ Lin. The song is so-so, I mean, I can listen to it once in a while, but will never be on repeat mode. He has perfect English though, so I find that very cool. The ending theme is [Lydia] by F.I.R. I’m pretty sure everybody knows this song. Definitely a good pick for the overall mood of the album. There’s one old school song in this album [童年往事] by 蔡琴. The melody is so sad, it makes me want to cry listening to it. I don’t know if it’s good or bad. As for the scores, they have a couple of classical piece which are decently played. I pretty much like the rest of the scores but [門魚之歌]. I particularly hate the “HUH” and “HEEAH” inserts; so wu liao [=annoying].

In a nutshell: I’d say…Buy. Even if you’re not an OST freak, this album is still worth your pennies. Might as well get it now when it’s still available.

  1. Ed

Juwita Suwito recently came to Australia to perform with Malaysian Idol winner, Jaclyn Viktor. I recorded a short vid of her performing Teresa Teng’s immortal “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin”.

  2. do you guys mail out mp3z? can you send me some?

  3. Christine

The actors and very obvious lack of budget completely destroyed what was an otherwise well-scripted drama. All I can say is: Luan gao! But the ending song by Tsai Chin was so sad, it somehow redeemed the story a tiny bit.

  4. zen

Hm, I’ve always seen this drama as one of the best I’ve seen. The guys’ acting spoilt the excellent plot, but I thought Ady was a competent actress. And yea I thought the theme song by Jenny Yang was great. Just a little trivia, Jenny Yang was a contestant in Super Idol, a singing competition in Taiwan, with judges like Bao Xiao Bo, etc. She eventually came in third but Bao Xiao Bo openly expressed his high opinions of her, and it was a pleasant surprise when I found out she’s the singer of the theme song. (:

  5. Christine

Wow I always wondered who this Jenny Yang girl was, and why she wasn’t credited with her Chinese name @_@ It’s so hard finding any info on her with such a common name.

  6. joanne

haha Juwita Suwito is not a countryman or whatsoever la lol.she’s a malaysian, from sabah i think, has native blood i think, and thus the malay-like name.and yeah have to agree she’s not bad.=)have a nice day!

  7. compliant

isn’t wu liao = boring and tao yan = annoying?

  8. black

yes.. wu liao = boring or nothing better to do, not annoying. anyway, annoying is more of fan than tao yan.

  9. Soo lin

are you kidding me?? this movie actually made me cry!!! especially when she lost yee hao or whatever / however u spell his name… when his ghost came back and all… these aren’t poor actors! the movie was suppose to be serious… not a lot of yippee doodah parts, which most of the time ended up in tears… but i loved this movie!!!
