Stanley Huang
Atheist Like Me

“If there is no believe, how will I meet you in the next life?
If heaven is without me, will you be happy?
If you are not here, heaven is not here.”

Above are quoted (and translated) from Stanley Huang’s latest album - Atheist Like Me. This is Stanley’s first album after joining Capitol Music, and his sixth overall. It continues the new found style of Stanley’s music, from his previous album -Shades Of My Mind . Strong, distinctive and emotional.

The main hit - Atheist Like Me, tells the story of a couple, where the boy questioned the existence of god, and the possibility of losing each other in heaven after death. The song built up on a slow-soul style, perhaps with some mix of dream pop, really deliver the sad, helplessness and romantic love story.

My favorite track is track no.4 - The Gift. The song expresses the end of a relationship, where leaving each other would be the best choice. The chorus goes like this: “She said, don’t cry..Leaving you is my gift to you..”. I absolutely love the slow rock beat of the song.

A few more tracks worth mentioned are track No.10 - Selfishness, which inspired by the movie - Cars, talks about we do not live in the world alone. The duet with Jolin, the eleventh track - Nice, is rock and heavy metal, but somehow doesn’t strike it off as good as his previous duet with Rene Liu and Elva. The final track - Into The Future, is dreamy and psychedelic, with the opening line: “I have these dreams, where I can see things happened. I can see, into the future.”

With much credit goes to the superstar producer - Jae Chong, Stanley raises his distinctive trademark music style to a new height in Atheist Like Me. I love this album, and in fact it sits on my playlist from February till now. I like comparing Stanley with Lee Hom. I see Lee Hom as the sunshine kind of boy, bright, handsome, kind and talented; then, I see Stanley as the completely opposite side, dark, unconventional look, controversial and sexy. So, if you got bore of Lee Hom, try Stanley’s latest album - Atheist Like Me.

Love this album as well, and ‘Gift’ is my favourite track alongside Atheist Like Me. I was really surprised by the album, because I’d first heard of him from the duet with Jolin last summer, and I didn’t expect him to be this good.

Also, I think your comparison of Leehom and Stanley is pretty much spot on :)

  2. Thanks for the comment Cali. ‘Gift’ is such a beautiful song.

My cousin played “Atheist Like Me” for me, and I liked it so I bought his album. I was shocked by his contrasting voice/attitude in each of the songs. He sounds industrial and quite perverted/dirty, but then he has sweet ballads. I am not sure if I will call myself a fan. Your comparison to Wang Lee Hom is quite true.
