Summer Lei
The Light of Darkness (Hei An Zhi Guang)
Release Date: 12 Dec 2006
The first thing that draws my attention to is the beautiful packaging featuring pictures ala Taiwanese Artist Jimmy. Apart from the captivating drawing on the cover, the booklet inside is also adorn with many more of such nice pictures. This is surely a visual feast for those into pretty packaging like me. Similar to the packaging of her earlier CDs, one will not be able to find the face behind the voice anywhere within the CD.
The music style of Summer Lei’s 4th outing remains true to that of the preceding 3 with all lyrics and music composed by her. In this CD, Lei’s mellow and often dreamy voice attempts to bring the listener on a mystical journey to a fantasy world where the past comes alive once more. There’s a touch of laziness in her deliverance and there are times where her singing can more aptly be described as a recital rather then singing. The lullabies-like songs collected here make it an ideal music companion for winding down on a quiet lazy evening.
This is not an album targeted at the mass market. People looking for catchy tunes and memorable lyrics will be disappointed as it will be difficult to find such elements in the 10 songs collected here. Slow ballads form the central theme with piano and guitar being the backbone in most songs. A point of interest is that one can often hear the incorporation of everyday sounds such as the splashing of the waves, the laughter of children, footsteps running, ticking of the clock and even noises from the hustle and bustle of traffic. The richness of these sounds makes up for the lack of complex music arrangements and adds a realistic touch.
A uniting theme among the songs on the CD is that of nostalgia. Track one [ 我的80年代 ] is the most radio friendly and brings one back to the memory of youth where life was carefree for the taking. This brings to mind the question “What were we doing back in the 80’s?”
Other notable tracks in the CD includes: [ 黑暗之光 ], [ 别人的天使 ] and [ 清晨旅行 ] .
Lei’s music style is an acquired taste. In this day of commercialism, it is indeed refreshing to still have a musician who sticks to her principles of making songs that she likes. This is a cause for applause. Let’s hope it’s not another 3 years till we next hear from her again.

Yes, I must agree that the cover is the first thing that draws me to this CD too. If you like this, you can also check out some of her ealier CDs, all beautifully packaged. Looks aside, do give his CD a spin and see how you like the music.
