Vincy Chan
Feelings (Gan Ying)

Vincy Chan - Vincy

If last year we have Janice impressing us as a newcomer and bringing fresh air into HK music scene, this year we have another equally talented girl. Her name is Vincy.

Better known as “泳儿/Wing Yee”, some critics may describe her voice as a blend of Faye Wong and Sandy Lam, and even Cass Pang. In a few ballads, her voice does sound like that of Faye Wong in her twenties.

It started with a fast number “巴不得/Ba But Bak/Longing For”, in which her voice slightly resembles Sandy Lam. The second track, “告白/Gou Bak/Confession” is nothing short of impressive. It amazes me how stong yet delicate her voice is, let alone the wide range of her vocal. The bridge of the song particularly gives me a chill when I listen to it.

“Fly To Me” is a soft English ballad written by Malaysian singer-songwriter Yu Heng, while “鱼在水中游/Yu Joi Soei Jung Yao/Fish in Water” has the same tune with Cantonese lyrics. With only guitar accompaniment, Vincy’s voice sounds even clearer and crispier in that song. Track 8, “你我她/Nei Ngo Ta/You, Me and Her” is a totally sweet and romantic tune. It’s perfectly delivered with Vincy’s delicate falsetto.

Other beautiful ballads in the album are “心中有数/Sum Jung Yao Sow” and the album’s first single cum title track “感应/Gum Ying/Feelings”. Again she impresses us with her high pitch and sweet vocal. The title track is a cover of a Mandarin song “一个人生活 Yi Ge Ren Sheng Huo”, however, in my opinion Vincy sings it even better than the original song. Included in the album is also two bonus tracks; the Mandarin version of “Gum Ying” with the same title, and the last track titled “I’m Vincy” in which Vincy talks about herself and her path to become a singer.

To make it short, this album is something that you must check it out. You’ll have no regret.

  1. I like her voice. It’s not as distinctive as Janice’s but it’s still refreshing.

  2. I thought I saw Cheer on the cover :)

Seems like the HK music scene keeps pumping out very talented new blood every year.

    Nice review, Jessy!

  3. Hi Christine,

I like her voice too and I think her singing skill is on par with Janice. I like Janice as well.

  4. Steve,

Hehe, does she look like Cheer?

It’s nice to see new talent coming out at HK music scene. Especially for female artists, there are Janice, Vincy, Ivana Jill…

Looking from that angle in the album cover, she does resemble Cheer’s look. Personally I think this is one of the best cantonese debut albums in recent years.

She has a second album with mostly cover version of popular songs including LeAnn Rimes’s “How Do I Live”, I prefer original versions of most of the songs in that album though.

Hopefully she’ll shine in the future instead of being just another singer.

  6. That is not her second album. It’s an audio CD of her mini concert which is included in a new version of her debut album. From there we know that she sings live well too.

    Lily,

Hi, thanks for leaving your message. :D

I loved your voice long before I’d heard you sing. I lost my way, thought all hope was gone, only to find that you may still be waiting for me to fulfill my promises to you. Not to mention what I have to sing to you, and regretting being too shy when you’d asked me to sing you to sleep many times before.

I like Vincy’s songs and I found her voice to be special.
Anyone got any idea whether her album is available in M’sia

  12. Hi picit01,

Yes her album is available in Malaysia. I’ve seen it. :)

  16. A breath of fresh air, I was mesmerized by her vocal prowess during one of the award shows on cable TV. She sang Gum Ying (Feelings) on that show. Her live singing is way better than Janice Vidal’s. I’ve been checking her out in youtube.com. The two best female Chinese singers in Hong Kong today are Vincy and Ivana Wong. They not only sound good, but also bring innovative music to Cantopop. Vincy does cover versions but those selections are very well done (like those of Sandy Lam). Bought Vincy’s second album yesterday. It’s of very high standards for a Cantonese album. Doi Yoke Has Smiled is the standout track amongst many good numbers in the album. It’s one of the best Chinese songs I’ve heard post 2000. Highly recommended.

I like her so much that I repeated Gan Ying over and over again… Car’s hers… DVD’s hers…

AGREED tat she sings gan ying very well. However I love the mandarin version by Lin Fan as well. Too bad Lin Fan didn’t release album anymore. Some of her songs are quite good, particularly one called, Seattle sth—–Xi Ya Tu De ……. (forgot already. anyone remember?)

I think Vincy sings 10x better than Janice. Janice tends to stretch her vocals to the limit and it sounds like yelling; she doesn’t have a big range but she tries to.
