Wang Lee Hom
Change My Ways (Gai Bian Zhi Ji)

Like Christina Aguilera’s Back To Basics offering, Leehom’s new album although doesn’t go that far back, it has this retro feel to it, specifically back into the 90s - which is also when he started his music career.

How is this album different from previous? It’s very easy going, not much of the hip and the hop. All the songs are very soothing, toned down, simple yet effective. Less drums and none of the songs are chinked-out. It shows that Leehom can diversify away from something that’s a sure thing and still produce good music.

This new album, I find it really easy - almost hard not to - move with the music. 10 songs out of 12 tracks. I can only wish there were more. As usual.

Make A Change (2): First single off the album. Very easy to get into, very upbeat and fun, suitable to bobbing the head with the music. A bit of hip hop and a bit of rock elements here and there.

Falling Leaves (3): I believe this is the second single. A soft piece with a moving violin solo. It’s almost like in the style of zong guo feng (ZGF) but stripped away of any chinese instruments. On a side note, nearing the end at 3.55 he sounded a bit like Jay there. Just a bit (not that it’s good or bad).

Our Song (5): A nice and simple track, using what sounds like a small drum set (that or electronically done from an old organ). Plus there’s a nice and very very simple and old fashioned-like drum solo.

You’re A Song In My Heart (6): Here’s a duet with Selina from SHE, Leehom’s first attempt at singing in Taiwanese, and it’s a mix of Mandarin and Taiwanese. I don’t really listen to Taiwanese so I shan’t make a judgement. But I must say there’s a nice blend between both voices. Very easy to listen to and very retro produced. Very laid back. This however would be the least favourite track of the album.

Where’s The Love (7): Perhaps the least attractive song but then again, it’s not. I think it’s his vocals that made this work. He sounds so effortless but in actual fact it’s not easy to sing it that way - one of the many talents of Leehom. Again, soothing music.

Cockney Girl (8): The only hip hop song in the album. The way it’s produced I think is very nicely done.

Incomplete Melody (9): Another soothing love song.

Love’s Encouragement (10): Another uplifting song with a nice piano background. Another melody to bob your head to. And again, another piano solo to enjoy.

Long Live Chinese (11): Title says it all. A fun song completely rapped. The chorus is very catchy to say the least. Most effective driving around playing the song with your mates singing along.

Wee Hours of Saturday (12): Easily my favourite song off the album. From the title to its delivery. A show-off of his vocals in its most tender ways, a slow and soothing melody to accompany it. He mixed his own voice as backups perfectly.

So, some may ask, Leehom losing his touch? Perhaps a mere misconception. Perhaps the 90s style doesn’t work on the younger fans. Perhaps not as good as Heroes Of Earth but it’s still a damn good one. While everyone else is still trying to replicate the ZGF sounds, Leehom is the first to say enough and step away from what has worked so well for him in the past few albums. I think it’s a risk that paid off. I welcome his change.

I have to say I am slightly disappointed with this album firstly because he has set such a high bar for himself with his previous brilliant album (heroes of the earth) that it is very difficult to outdo himself and I am not a fan of this 90s style of music, which is why I never listened to his song until the last album…

listening to this album was like hearing “qing di bei duo fen” all over again…I was hoping he wld reinvent himself rather than gg back to his old style of music. I think a common critic of him is that he has yet to find his niche in music, or maybe he does not need a niche, o his niche is dabbling a bit in everything?

but i hope one day he will release a jazz/soul influenced album, because he has great vocals that can carry off such genre. he is most charismatic sitting in front of the piano crooning soulful tunes. Forget the rap, the hip and the hop. (oh and cheesy taiwanese duet covers…er….no thank you…)

  2. I cannot agree with you more in regards to your views on his hip hop and jazz/soul idea. Which is partly why I enjoy this album - the lack of hip hop. I think hip hop is just too over rated today it’s even past boring.

Honestly, I didn’t like him when he first came out. Beethoven didn’t do much for me either. I only started when he produced his own albums.

But niche isn’t the problem. Unlike many other songwriters and composers, I think it’s good he doesn’t stick to just one type of style.

But yes, he definitely should do jazz/soul next because like I always say, he has the most soulful voice in the chinese music industry. And he has tried a jazz number before (love, love, love) which I totally enjoyed. So until then… though i’m very satisfied with this one.

  3. After LeeHom shocked us in his heroes album, he wants us to take a breather, one step back, and enjoy the music - his ‘trueself’ music.

Nothing spectacular. You will listen to it over and over again.

A solid round by LeeHom :)

  4. alice

i’ve never heard leehom music pre shangri la so looking forward to listening to the rest of the album which ive just purchased ;) love gai bian zi ji!! its so easy to listen to and so happee. i just want to bop my head to it =)

  5. Sharon

I guess it really depends on your style really… I didn’t like his rappy/hip-hop-ish songs all that much…

I actually like his older songs. I still believe that his songs different from other artists. He still stands out to me. I’ve only heard his his second and 8th track. i really liked gai bian zi ji but not soo much of ‘cocky girL’

  6. Sharon

    oh woops cockney* girl

  7. jaeyeen

well, i never feel disappointed to lee hom before.. he impressed me that well from his first album.. till no one can ever take away his place in my heart..

his new album is freaking cool! the first song is heard was falling leaves.. as for a dancer, this song is sooooooo suitable for contemporary.. so smooth and wow.. i just love the song so so much..

i am going to buy the album soon.. ^^.. hope to hear more great songs from his latest album

  8. i like all of his album!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. jewel-li

I think this album is great! there’re more soothing songs in this album than his previous album which has more of the hip-hop chinked out style songs. simple instruments, along with simple yet meaningful lyrics sung by his wonderfully soulful voice draws me into the songs and keeps me listening till the very end. i really like 不完整的旋律 & 星期六的深夜, can feel the emotions he puts into them. the duet with Selina is nice and very sweet. 改變自己, and 愛的鼓勵 are happy encouraging songs. 我們的歌 sounds kinda like the song, Melody by David Tao, the part at the beginning. i was really hoping for some ZGF in this album, something like花田錯, I love that song! but oh well, maybe in the next album~

  10. K.T

As such a talented artist who loves music so much, Lee Hom tries to deliver his passion and feelings through his meaningful tune and lyrics. This is way his songs is just like the album title Gai Bien Zi Zhi, he changes his style and his songs are always different but yet you can still tell its his style.

Although Lee Hom didn’t adopt his Chinked-out style and the songs my seem smoothing and ordinary like most love songs, yet it still shines and shows depth as you listen to them.

I liked Lee Hom’s chinked-out style but this album is still realy nice, its shows heart and feelings and the album is out standing in its own way.
Waiting for Good Music will always be worth it.

  11. johnny

    whats ZGF?

  12. Christine

The duet is actually one of my faavorites from this album. I also like listening to Jiang Hui’s Taiwanese duets, so I guess it’s a personal thing. Honestly, I think this album is kind of like David Tao’s latest: there’s nothing wrong with it, but there’s nothing great about it either.

  13. This album doesn’t disappoint me. Opposite, it reallyy makes me feel so excited and so looking forward to it.
I know this kind of music is not new to everyone, but i think it’s new to Hom’s music. Right huh?
I think it’s Hom’s new experience on this kinda, but it’s absolutely awesome.
I love all songs of Hom, from the old songs to present.

  14. Fern

I think this album is just wonderful. It shows that LeeHom can still make an impact in the music industry. He is still one of the many talented artistes in Taiwan, or some may say Asia. His previous songs were wonderful, and this album is just excellent. His collaboration with Selina is one of my favourite. Stay on, Lee Hom!!

  15. Rita

this album doesn’t dissapoint me. really…
Lee hom has his own character to composing his own thinking into music , and also his vocal , really amazing and touch my heart.
niche is not a problem for Lee Hom ? music is a kind of Feel. just feel Lee Hom always tries hard to give his best to us. i like this album very much , especially GAI BIAN ZI JI ( Change Me ) , so happy… Lee Hom JIA YOU ! !!! hope to hear his new music again…

  16. Neji

I think he should produce a jazz album. He’s got the talent and the right voice for it. Would be awesome.

Otherwise, I think he should steer clear of rapping… not really his strong suite if you as me.

  17. Oh you think so? I think his rapping is fine and decent enough. he’s improved a lot too. I’m hooked to the rap in Hua Ren Wan Shui and Cockney Girl at the moment.

But yea, definitely a Jazz album. He’s shown he’s capable of doing standards too singing a duet for Tony Bennett’s latest album.

  18. Neji

I do actually… Guess it’s personal taste but somehow he just can’t pull it off (for me anyway)…

I didn’t realise he did a duet with Tony Bennett… will have to check that out.

  19. johnny: whats ZGF?

    Zhongguo Feng.

  20. Johnny: whats ZGF?

    Zhongguo Feng

  21. Michael

I really love this album!!! I bought it 4 days ago and I couldn’t stop to hear it again and again (until now). this album is definitely the album of the year! although I also lost his heavily chinked out style songs like in heroes, but I still think that the songs in this album are spectacular and moving. Some of songs like change me, love’s praise, and other upbeat tracks make me feel happy and I couldn’t stop dancing to them. while others like the falling leaf returns to root, where’s the love (my favourite song! It’s unbelievable!),and the last track gave me this emotional feelings that I’ve never got from any other artists. Leehom is my hero!!!! Rock on Leehom!!! Yeah!

  22. omni

I’m really in love with this album as well. It’s true that nothing jumps out as being spectacular, but altogether, it’s a solid and extremely enjoyable album. These songs have been getting stuck in my head all the time lately. I do agree it’s like getting back to the basics; the melodies and lyrics are simple yet touching. I like all the songs off the album, but my faves are Luo Ye Gui Gen, Wo Men De Ge, Ni Shi Wo Xin Nei De Yi Shou Ge, Cockney Girl, and Xing Qi Liu De Shen Ye. Great album!

  23. Jules

oooo….Lee hom is really good in his soothing love songs. Have been listening to his album over and over and over again and not bored at it yet, until my male colleague finally accepted the fact how anybody can go goo-goo over leehom. My favourite is still trach no5 - Our Song. Track 6 ..hmmm… enjoyed listening to it bcos its so funny… not actually a nice song.. its just plain cute. Somebody commented that this song is actually an effort to overtake the Marry Me duet of David Tao and Jolin. I would definitely agree that Lee Hom should do more jazzy and soul album. Gosh, he doesnt need all those sophisticated instruments… a piano with his voice and a love song will kill almost anyone.

  24. Missy

I have been a huge fan of Wang Lee Hom since I these tiny kid, and I’ve continued to support him. However, after listening to this album, I was slightly disappointed. After looking into many of his lyrics, I realized that a lot of times he simply took his old song titles and incorporated them into the songs. Wang Lee Hom is known for writing brilliant lyrics and it just seemed like he’s losing his touch

  25. Lala

hmm.. i really like this kind of multitalented musician..
    i don’t think he’s losing his touch anyway…
this album has sumkind of easy-listening song here.. not much dat kind of hip-hop thingy.. n i kinda like it..
maybe it’s just the different taste of music we have..

  26. Jodi

well, you have to give him a break. i mean, he’s been singing for 13 years with 12 mandarin albums out. and that’s amazing given his age.
i didn’t even know about him until about 2 years ago and i think he’s done so well just keeping his popularity over so many years.
this album brings out a softer and simpler side after using the chinked-out/hip hop style for 2 albums
and i actually think using old song titles in his songs gives him originality

  27. Fish

Yes, it really a great album. I have been re-listening to “Our Song”, it one of the great song in the album. Simple and Nice. This is only Lee Hom’s album that I bought.

  28. Kupo

I have to admit, at first, I didn’t really like this album. It didn’t have the same fast-paced, hip-hoppy songs like Gai Shi Ying Xiong, or ZGF like Hua Tian Cuo or Xin Zhong De Ri Yue that came in the recent albums. But after a listening to the album for a while, some of the songs just grew on me. My favorites of his new album would be Ai Zai Na Li, Xing Qi Liu De Shen Ye, and Luo Ye Gui Gen. I guess you could say I’m a sucker for those slow ballad songs.

  29. Missy, i disagree. Only someone who’s made it this big writing his own songs can use his old song titles in new songs and fans will immediately get what he means. and only a good songwriter can use his old song titles and incorporate it into his new songs to get that effect on his fans. it doesn’t feel like he just threw them in and around wherever he likes. the meaning is still there.

  30. karazenkara

love track song #3 & #12!thanx lee hom!

  31. i’m so excited about this new album! I haven’t heard any songs from it yet, but i can’t wait! wang lee hom is one of my favorite artist. although i wish i knew more about his song. i don’t speak chinese fluently, but i’ve been taking lessons for a year. : )

  32. i agree with delrondu 100%. only someone as confident and as excellent an artist as leehom can use the titles of his old songs in his new compositions to express much more than its surface meaning. although its only a few words, fans would get that it is actually swollen with meaning.

personally, i think this album is such a relief from other albums in the market. its unpretentious and sincere. it makes a soothing hear. songs like #5 wo men de ge and #10 ai de gu li is testimony of that. and the more you listen to this album, the better it sounds. and i especially love all the piano and guitar solo he slips into his songs. overall, i am in awe of this album.

and i am crossing my fingers for a jazz album. he does have a masters in jazz composition after all!

p/s: leehom sounds too cute when he raps with his ABC accent.

  33. hi there!
I’ve been listening to Wang’s songs for about (just) 2 months. in the beginning i didn’t pay much attention to him since i like Jay Chou a lot and i read that Jay help some of Wang’s track, so i thought that Wang wouldn’t be better that Jay.

needless to say, i was completely wrong. Wang did astonished me through his ultra-speedy speech in “Beside the Plum Blossom”
    i admire him!

    nice 2 c u all!

  34. by the way, thanks for this review. i’ll try them too

  35. yenny

hey inda! Jay helped in some of Wang’s tracks? In what way? I didn’t know that you know.. which tracks do you know?

  36. coppi o

i agree with everyone hey..this album is so different from his heroes on earth album..i really like the laid-back feel of his songs, with some head-bobbing tunes..the first song i heard was ‘gai bian zi ji’ and that grabbed my attention straight away!!..the best song on the album is probably ‘xing qi liu de shen ye’..his voice is so nice.. ~hehehe~
    >.

  37. Shiau Lee

Well, is definitely a different kind of album…. is like Lee Hom is changing himself to be a…. should i said my ecletic kinda musician…. he is the ‘idol aka “Ou Xiang Pai”‘ type or ‘talented aka “Shi Li Pai”… I’m not really sure now…. but one thing, he really does changed since he acted in “Lust, Caution” Probably is the after effect of acting in 60s era film, or mayb under influence of Lee Ang…. Even the “Luo Ye Gui Gen” was wrote when he was still acting as Kum Ming…… He did mentioned it, right….????

  38. leehom as ou xiang pai? i think that is a really big insult to him. he has never been ou xiang pai.

and Jay has never helped leehom with his music, nor vice versa. i believe they both have too much pride to let that happen since they have always been compared to each other.

shou qian shou is different because that song did not appear in either leehom’s or david’s album.

  39. Hey!
Many many chineses singers sing a song and record the second voice too..(i dont know if you understand my english.its so poor)..
Like the track 7. Maybe Wang Lee Hom recorded to make second voice..pretty good!

    Bye!Kissgoodbye

  40. Cynthia

I haven’t listened to any of the songs, but I’ve written the album down so once I get the chance, I will. However, I just wanted to mention that this album caught my eye because the album name “luo4 ye4 gui1 gen” or “falling leaves” is actually the name of a book “falling leaves” that I read at school. I can’t quite remember who the author was, but I do remember reading the touching book. :]

  41. Carey Lai

I was shocked when i listen to Lee Hom’s “change myself”album! What’s up?Where is Lee Hom’s special hip-hop n rap syllable? But…………….after i listen some more time, i realise that not so bad that i think although not so much hip-hop song in this album!!Gambateh, Lee Hom!!!

  42. Zi

cant stop lee hom music especially this is i never get bored of it. the song is called 爱在哪里

  43. grace

I think the change in the album is caused by the change of his perception of his life. He always mentions how his music is the biggest part of his life. So I view this album as an attempt to rediscover himself, to lay back after all those hip-hop rush and all. But I enjoy the album pretty much, especially “wo men de ge- our song”. Being a loyal fan, I am touched by the sincerity of this song. I’ll be looking out for his new album always, for I know he’ll present himself in another kind of music, which can be well-accepted or not, but nevertheless his grandeur as an outstanding musician will never fade.

  44. Emajanti

“Missy, i disagree. Only someone who’s made it this big writing his own songs can use his old song titles in new songs and fans will immediately get what he means. and only a good songwriter can use his old song titles and incorporate it into his new songs to get that effect on his fans. it doesn’t feel like he just threw them in and around wherever he likes. the meaning is still there.”

Delrondu, very well said. I am 10000% with you on this.

Leehom no doubt, can produce and master any kind of music and they are all good. Change Me is no exception. Some may like R&B more, some prefer Chinked-Out. But there are also many who just fall in love with this simple but brilliant album. It’s Leehom’s special gift. He can be loved by different kind of people. I am so proud of him.

  45. Jason

I think this album was extremely well done by Leehom. This change in him was very positive because the album is more of a laid back, easy listening style compared to some of his previous albums. I was skeptical about listening to the album at first but I was so use to his chinked-out style (I didn’t start listening to him until 2005), but once you listen to it more, you realize that the album is great, and you enjoy the songs more and more.

The songs in the album were all great. It just shows how much diversity Leehom has in his musical abilities and his style too. Songs like Wo Men De Ge, Ai Zai Na Li, and Luo Ye Gui Gen all had repetitive lyrics, but the way Leehom sings it make it sound extremely good and it was effective too.

I think that we shouldn’t criticize this album. After all, Leehom spent more than at least 10,000,000 NT dollars (which is about $30000US) just to produce the album. After all, I don’t think a lot of artists out there will spend that much just to produce an album. It shows how dedicated he is to music, and how much he wants his fans to enjoy his lyrics.

  46. Eww i’m so outdated. I only got to know leehom with his new album few seconds ago. I love leehom’s songs despite not knowing chinese. I’m such a failure.

  47. Eason47

I can’t believe there are people complaing about the quality of this album…
before this I heard alot comments that this album is not that nice compare to his previous albums…

    but don’t believe those hype!
    this is nicely done album…
as a matter of fact…i think this is the best album he had ever done!
    out of 10 songs…
7 songs are my favourite songs…
the other 3 also not bad…depends on your style…

    Hi guys,

I was just taking a break from recording when my assistent told me to check out this website so I just flipped out my macbook. First off, I want to thank everyone for listening to my music! I’m glad you like the songs on the new album. Secondly, I am already working on my next album, which will contain a few jazzy numbers too. Remember to check out “Miss you still” (Hai xiang ni) if you like my piano songs.

    Kay have to go now
    Leehom

  49. A big thank you to Leehom for visiting us here at CMB. This message has been duly conveyed to the forum section.

There are many more supporters inside the forum and we are all very eager to catch him in Lust, Caution.

Our deepest and most sincere thanks to Leehom for a decade of music. Keep it up!

  50. psykai

I must say that I was a bit disappointed when I first heard the album. Was really looking to some new funky “chinked out” songs of his. But after some more hearings I’ve gotten to like this album as well(No surprise). Though this album isnt my favourite(Shangri La!)I can still really appreciate the he makes. One of the things I like about his music is the variety. In that sense he’s didn’t dissapoint me, it was different, only not my style. So I’ll again, be looking very forward to his following album, eager to hear the new things he’s got installed for us this time.

  51. Um….I really like this album actually, “Change me”, “Falling leaves”, “Incompelete melody”,”You are a song of my heart” I like it very much; attractive melody and sound, I always listen this album even today. “Cokney girl” is a cuite song about “chicked out”, it is better than before albums.

I remember the first song I like about leehom is “don’t be afraid”, the melody is quite comfortable. “The one and the only one” is my lovely song even now.

The voice of leehom is very attractive for me, and love song is the best to represent this, so, keep going!!

  52. ani

    Hi Lee hom…
I really love your new album.I have one in my house. All the songs are very great.I always wait for your coming in Indonesia,my country.
    Jia you Lee hom ….

  53. Nadine

Lee Hom is a really great artis and idol , he graduated in the college and successfully devolope his name in the entertaiment world . He can play many kinds of music instruments and sing various kind of music like Jazz, Rap , sentimental .
    He is very admirable.
Lee Hom, if you are reading this , I wish to let know that all his fans are around the world will be there for him and will always support him .

    Keep it up!

  54. TYYB

I label this album as a “digression” in Leehom’s music. I knew Leehom through his “chinked-out” music and have been hooked since. As a fairly new fan, but not neccessarily unfamiliar with him, I really wanted him to continue with his “chinked-out” music, but I still welcomed the change.

The album was refreshing because it was so simple. There was no complex arrangments or layers of sound which were present in his last two albums, although they do showcase his music genius. With this album, he still impressed me but of course in a different way. With “chinked-out,” I was amazed with his creativity; with this album I was amazed with his ability to capture emotions into music. The last track serves as a great example. I can feel the lonliness, but also the contention. It’s one of my favorites now. “Luo Ye Gui Gun” is absolutely beautiful especially the arrangement. It really showcases Leehom’s musical talents because it has a very “grand orchestra” feel, not seen in popular music very often.

Unlike his past love songs which were usually man-woman relationships, these love songs were about love in general. Love for each other. I think I have authority to say this because I don’t understand chinese so I listen purely for music. I can totally feel this kind of “inner peace and tranquility.” (can’t find another way to say it)

Like a lot of you, I hope he comes out with a Jazz/RnB album next.

  55. Qianxun

I kind of miss his chinked-out music. It was so much fun listening to Heroes of the Earth. But this new album made me like Leehom even more. I simply loved the duet between Selina and him. It was simple and adorable to a certain extent. It’s one of those songs that I like to sing along to, hehe.

  56. melissa

I totally loved this album, and yeah, about that whole ”using his older song titles in his new lyrics” thing, I found it brilliant and really witty actually!

And I would like to thank Lee Hom for bringing back my interest in the Chinese language!

I have learnt Mandarin for over 11 years in school, but due to the lack of exposure to it at home and with friends, I never really connected with the language…and my spoken Mandarin sounds pretty odd haha!

But anyway, thanks once again for making me interested in my native tongue all over again!

    Great work, keep it up!

  57. melissa

is that really leehom? :) that would be so cool if it is! missed your l.v. concert because my sad friends didn’t want to drive four hours. boo. my comments on this album…first, something not completely related. i love how leehom is being GREEN. recycled paper…very little plastic (well, the actual CD had some). moving on, at first i didn’t take to this cd as readily as the others, but upon repeated listenings, i remembered why i loved him so much. the texture of his voice is first-rate (clearly displayed in the ballads), and i love how this CD has a softer feel and is a bit of a throwback. definitely wasn’t feeling cockney girl, though. the sound wasn’t bad, but the lyrics…eh. :P i understand the change from “chinked-out,” but i have to confess i miss the chinese instruments/influences. still, this was a pretty great album. love you, leehom.

  58. chinkedout

i was really disppointed with this album coz i thought it was boring. a couple of good songs only like the duet with selena. the cockney girl song is really irritating. while most songs were pleasant, none really stood out. sounded like any other chinese album out there.
i still believe lee hom is super talented ( been to his concerts) and is capable of more. maybe he was too busy with acting this time.

btw, i saw “lust, caution” and much as i like him as a musician and personality, he cannot act at all. he was a piece of wood in the movie.

pls, lee hom, stick to music and quit acting- it’s not your thing!!!

  59. Shurl33

    I love this album too…
