Wilfred Lau
Past & Present

I decided to give this album a try when my friend introduced it to me.

Wilfred Lau Hou Long is the winner of the Global Chinese Singing Contest in 1997. He has come a long way before he released his first album in 2004.

Most of the songs in the album are easy-listening ballads, except for the groovy “Shut Up Baby” and “师兄急转弯 See Heng Gup Juin Wan”. Since he became a singer, Wilfred’s voice has been said to resemblance Eason Chan. For me this is more noticeable in the two fast tracks. Among the composers who contribute to this album are Justin, James Ting, 蓝亦邦 Lam Yik Pong, 陈辉阳 Chan Fai Yong and Robert Lay.

It’s a decent album after all. Even the two Mandarin songs “很久没见 Hen Jiu Mei Jian” and “好兄弟 Hao Xiong Di” are done well. The strong point is on Wilfred’s vocal. The weak point is that the songs sound so similar among each other that at the end, not many songs leave a strong impression in my mind.

Notable tracks:

Track 1 – Shut Up Baby
I never thought that the first track will be a fast one. Groovy melody and funky lyrics. It’s fun to listen to this.

Track 2 -二等天使 Yi Dang Tin See
Composed by latest HK sensation Justin, this is my favorite track. Both the melody and lyrics are well written. The range is quite wide and there are some very high notes but Wilfred sings it at ease.

Track 3 - 战友 Jin Yaw
Written by Lam Yik Pong, this is a song about friendship and achieving dreams. Some say it’s describing the friendship between Wilfred and Denise Ho.

Track 6 – 94340634
This is composed by Robert Lay, yup, he’s the one who wrote “Good Person” for Justin. Nice melody. Like the title, the lyrics are pretty interesting too. It’s about a guy’s feelings when another guy calls his girlfriend in the middle of the night. If you haven’t already guessed it, the numbers are a telephone number. Whose number is it? Well, you gotta try it and tell me.
