Will Liu Geng Hong
Rainbow of Heaven (Cai Hong Tian Tang)

Well, I tell you one thing: His vocal is borderline mediocre, but a step better than any boybands. He’s one of those who highly depend on composers and good look. He survives just fine doing ballads, but the moment he moves to fast tracks, he loses it. So here’s a piece of my advice for you, Will: stay away from rapping, rock, and any 80’s influenced pieces even if that means refusing politely offers from your pal, Jay Zhou.

Notable tracks:
The songs I like from this album are probably what the general audience like the most: [彩虹天堂], [情畫] and his duet with Evonne Hsu [許慧欣/Xu Hui Xin]: [心動心痛]. I can definitely see the latter as a karaoke hit because its vocal range is bearable and the song is pretty simple. Call me crazy, come to think about it, I think [彩虹天堂] and [情畫] sound alike after awhile. Huh. Interesting. [因為有你] has a pretty lyric, but the song itself is not impressive. [不說] is a decent piece though I find it borderline sappy and that makes it boring. Run away from this next track before it gives you headache: [直到最後]. What a horrible, horrible song! Dumb rapping, arrangement, composition, everything is just damn wrong! I really hope that it is definitely 最後 [= the last] we ever have to hear it! Ever! You know what else is bad? [西域傳奇] and [創世紀]. Why? These two are rock wanna be songs that have no body, sound like they consist of the same 3 chords and just simply boring. Next is [心靈交戰]. You can “smell” Jay Zhou from its first second. I despise the rapping, but kinda like the chorus. All I can tell you is that this song proves that having Jay Zhou’s stamp on your album doesn’t guarantee any success.

In a nutshell: This album is B-O-R-I-N-G. If I could turn back time (like Cher ), I definitely wouldn’t buy this album. Go buy Khalil Fong’s “Soulboy” instead. It’s a better investment for your CD collection.

  1. Haven’t heard the whole album, but I heard Cai Hong Tian Tang, the duet, and the Jay Chou-esque song. I hate his voice. It’s so boring and weak that I don’t understand how he ever had the thought of releasing an album. He’s a cool guy, but man he can’t sing.

  2. i heard the whole album and i really REALLY recommend it tho everyone. a must listen song is 心靈交戰 (xin ling ziao jan). It’s aweeeeeeeeeesome to bits - a unique combo of ballad and rock…! the ballads are a bit dull though, but his intrepretation of music combined with his vocal make the album irresistible.

  3. 劉畊宏, isn’t him the Jay’s body trainer? His singing is actually not bad when he’s in shubidua.

Haha, anyway, thanks for the review :)

  4. red

yeah that’s him lol. but he’s also a composer, which is the reason why he decided to sing his own songs. he composed the lyrics for all except one of the songs in this album and the music for few songs.

overall the album wasn’t impressive, his singing wasn’t impressive either. to be fair, there are many more chinese albums which are worse than this one.

  5. this review sucks

this is the worst review i have ever read. This is probably the most impressive album I have heard in the past 5 years. Do you know what CD is really bad? Jay Chou’s (not Zhou …) newest CD. How can anyone say this is a good CD?

I would really like to know which albums you think are “good” and who you think doesn’t have a mediocre voice.

Alright there, buddy, you’re entitled to your opinion. As for [Zhou] or [Chou], I’m following the standard pinyin rule, which is [Zhou]. I’m glad that you still read my review and that it triggered you to express your opinion. That means this review rocks. Thank you.

Haha I’d also like to know what you’ve been listening to if this is “the most impressive album” you have heard in five years. I’d also like to know why you’re such a coward you can’t even put up a decent name and email address.
