Yida Huang
The Grand Finale (Wan Zheng Yan Chu)
Yi Da, Yi Da. I don’t know what I should do with you! I like you, man, but I have to admit this album is a… [完整 flop] a.k.a “Complete Flop”. It’s as if Yi Da ran out of gas both in vocal and inspirations. His vocal definitely takes a step backward compared to his previous album. That brings me to the conclusion that…as a singer, he pretty much maxes out on his limit.
This album offers nothing new and exciting. With tough competition from new blood like Evan Yo, I would have taken a longer break from releasing another album if I were him.
Notable Tracks:
Unfortunately, his ballads in this album are dull and start to sound the same. The only one that stands out is perhaps [到底多久]. I really like its orchestral, dramatic arrangement. It’ll make a great movie credit roll song. As for the rest of the songs…let’s see here…Well, I really like [某天]. Upbeat, sounds more like western pop, but that’s okay, I’ll forgive him for that. When I listen to it, I feel like I’m riding the waves of the ocean; free and exciting. The general public might find [文成公主] kinda cuckoo, but I find it somewhat interesting. It has a unique blend of western new age and Chinese traditional chants. The only downfall is it is as flat and monotonous as a chant. The slightly dark composition mixed with rock guitar riffs makes [完整演出] a good piece to end a concert. I am just glad that this piece gives me a break from listening to the rest of his boring ballads. And…last but not least, the punch line of the day is…(drum roll please): I find [My Love My Dear] mind-boggling. Why the hell would you ruin a good acoustic song with a retarded childlike modified vocal!? One word: SKIP.
In a nutshell: This album is horrible! Don’t even bother spending a penny on it. Not worth it. Period.

Agreed! The only track I ever listen to is Wan Zheng Yan Chu, and sometimes Leng Zhan. I don’t remember the melody of a single ballad from this album. Eck. I do like Yida though too…

Yeah, but there was a rumor mentioned on Wikipedia that Yida tried to commit suicide before this album was released. Maybe he knew it would be a flop?

def not as good as his other albums, but i wouldn’t say its a complete flop, i do like grand finale and the chanting song.
the last song baffled me at first, but it’s a demo version of a song. he was saying on a tv interview that he didnt have enough time to finish it before the album was released, so he just put it out as a demo. it freaked me out when i first heard it, though, i thought my copy of the cd was bad.

He obviously had another kind of inspiration on this album, maybe he wasnt that happy or something…another emotion and this album was the result of all those feelings and thoughts..if you like the artist you have to appreciate everything he does..thats what I think.hes great.

Yes, I like Yida and I like whatever he does. And I think he’s still grate. Why everyone understand him. And, I’m sure he’s a sensitive person. That’s why he tried to jump from the window.I’ve it from his interview with Ge Mi Da Shi Jie. Whatever it is, I still like him.Jia You, Yida! And don’t ever think about suicide thing again.

I’m so glad you mentioned Evan Yo in your review, because it really gives the reader some perspective on where your review is coming from, (in that it gives us a better understanding of what is good music in your opinion). To me, Evan Yo is exactly what I think of when it comes to unoutstanding music that doesn’t really seem to differentiate itself from the rest of Chinese pop.
I think there are some songs in 完整演出 maybe didn’t stand out exceptionally (although for me I would only include 莫天 in that category and not even My Love My Dear, because it is Yida’s habit to include a Demo version on his albums… or at least that’s what I’ve noticed in the past). I will grant you that the vocals are not so wonderful as in 地下鐵(demo版) or his demo version of 目擊者. Both of those demo’s merely made me anticipate the final version. I think, as well, you did not give 那女孩, 我懂, 冷戰 the merit they derserve. Yida’s music is at least individualistic even if it isn’t necessarily your cup of tea. For me though, I feel 完整演出 is still worth the money.

I think that this is not his best album, but definitely not a ‘complete flop’? the mood of the album is obviously different from the previous album. Exclusive Code was filled with mostly nice ballads but this album is full with upbeat songs and to his credit, they are all different from each other, in a good way. Listening through the album, I thought that it is still a masterpiece. Never had I imagined that a chinese singer could release something that sound like this. For what it’s worth, Yida is still bringing out his unique sound and melody and this album is definitely worth buying. I love it as it is.

Come on, that review is a little bit unfair, although having read the comment from Inkblueraindrops, I understand it a bit more.
I went seriously out of my way to get whatever scraps of Yida Huang songs I could; beg, borrow, or steal, and I was not disappointed by the album at all.
I loved Wo Dong, Wen Cheng Gong Zhu, and Wan Zheng Yan Chu the most, but (and I admit I don’t have the complete album) none of the other 4 or 5 songs I have are disappointing. I think you’re too harsh on poor Yida. :(
